Valerian oil is extremely relaxing and soothing. It is particularly good for insomnia and nervous disorders. A relaxing herbal tea is also made from its roots. Traditionally it is used as a herbal tincture or tablet as a sedative. Valerian has a pungent aroma, which can be lifted by blending with Roman or Moroccan Chamomile, Patchouli, Lavender, Cedarwood, Sweet Orange or Mandarin. To encourage a restful night’s sleep, try 1 drop of Valerian, 2 drops of Roman Chamomile and 1 drop of Lavender blended with 10ml of Coconut oil. Massage this gently all over the body, then lie back in a warm bath to allow the blend to soak into the skin. Alternatively, the same quantities of essential oils could be added to a burner or diffuser placed in the bedroom half an hour before bedtime. Main Theraputic Properties: Antispasmodic, Sedative, Bactericidal, Calmative. Contraindications: Possibly sensitising.
